What Is Sparrow Wallet? An Honest Review

Sparrow is a free, Bitcoin-only desktop wallet. It speaks to hardware devices, shows every UTXO, and lets you practice coin control without a website in the middle. When a client is ready to leave "an app that also does NFTs," this is often the next chair I sit them in. I have no sponsorship or affiliate relationship with Sparrow.

Who This Is For

People who already understand a seed phrase and want a grown-up Bitcoin desk: see coins, send with a chosen fee, connect a Trezor or Coldcard, maybe run against their own node later. It is not a first wallet for someone who just bought $50 on Coinbase. Start with the Security page and a simple hardware setup. Sparrow is step two or three.

What It Is

A desktop program you download from the official site, sparrowwallet.com. It can be a hot wallet (I usually say no), a watch-only viewer, or the screen in front of a hardware signer. You pick a derivation path on purpose, which is how we find "lost" balances after a sloppy restore.

Strengths

It shows the truth. UTXOs, fees in sats/vB, change outputs. No cartoon hiding the machinery. That is the point.
Hardware is a first-class citizen. QR and USB flows with devices people actually own. The seed can stay off the computer.
Coin control without a lecture. You click the coins. You see the privacy and fee consequences. Pair with the Trezor Suite review if you want a simpler cousin.
Your own node, when you are ready. Public servers work. A personal Bitcoin Core connection is better. Sparrow does not force that on day one.

Weaknesses and Honest Warnings

It looks like software for adults. That scares some people and it should, a little. If the interface makes you guess, you are not ready to send size.
Bitcoin only. No ETH, no Solana, no in-app swap tab. That is a feature. People still install it and then ask where their USDC went.
A hot wallet in Sparrow is still hot. Desktop malware still wins if you load the seed on the same machine you use for email. I set it up as watch-only plus hardware almost every time.
Download path matters. Fake Sparrow sites exist, same as every wallet. Official site only. Verify the signature if you know how. If you do not, we do that in a session before any seed is involved.

Who Should Skip It

Anyone who wanted a phone app, a multi-chain browser wallet, or a one-tap swap. Use Revoke.cash for EVM approvals, and keep Bitcoin here. For inheritance planning, Sparrow makes a clean watch-only view for the surviving spouse after they have the letter. The letter still lives in the inheritance guide, not in the software.
