What Is a Watch-Only Wallet?

Published 2026-08-15. Last updated 2026-08-15. Written by John Alewine, Crypto Guidance Inc.

A watch-only wallet is a viewer. It knows your public keys or addresses, so it can show balances and incoming payments. It does not hold the private key. It cannot spend. When I set someone up with a hardware wallet, this is usually the phone app I want them to open every day, not the seed-holding app they downloaded first.

Who This Is For

Anyone who wants to see "did the Coinbase withdrawal land" without keeping spend authority on a device that also has Instagram. It is not a vault. It is not a backup. If the watch-only app disappears, your coins are still on the chain. If you accidentally imported the seed into that same app, it is not watch-only anymore.

When It Matters

Every hardware setup I do for a normal household. Pair it with the Security page and, if you use Bitcoin seriously, coin control.
