What Is a Watch-Only Wallet?

A watch-only wallet is a viewer. It knows your public keys or addresses, so it can show balances and incoming payments. It does not hold the private key. It cannot spend. When I set someone up with a hardware wallet, this is usually the phone app I want them to open every day, not the seed-holding app they downloaded first.

Who This Is For

Anyone who wants to see "did the Coinbase withdrawal land" without keeping spend authority on a device that also has Instagram. It is not a vault. It is not a backup. If the watch-only app disappears, your coins are still on the chain. If you accidentally imported the seed into that same app, it is not watch-only anymore.

How It Actually Works

You export an xpub, zpub, or a set of addresses from the hardware device or from a careful desktop wallet. The watch-only app subscribes to those scripts and lists UTXOs or account balances.
Receiving still works. You can show a QR. Spending still requires the cold device, or it should.
On Bitcoin, address reuse still hurts privacy even in watch-only mode. Give each payer a new address. See coin control.

Risks I See in Sessions

People import the seed "just to see it faster." That converts a viewer into a hot wallet on the worst device you own.
A lookalike "portfolio tracker" that asks for the seed is a drainer. Public data is enough for a real watch-only app.
Gap limits: if you generated 50 unused addresses on the hardware and the watcher only looks at 20, it will look empty. That is a software setting, not a theft.
