What Is a Coldcard? An Honest Review

Coldcard is a Bitcoin-only hardware wallet from Coinkite. It is built to stay off USB for daily life: you move a PSBT on a MicroSD card, sign on the device, carry the signed file back to a computer that never saw the seed. That is a real air gap, not a marketing sticker. I have no sponsorship or affiliate relationship with Coinkite.

Who This Is For

Someone who already survived a basic Ledger or Trezor setup, already tested a restore, and now wants the computer as far from the seed as possible. It is the device I bring up when a client says "I am keeping this for a decade." It is not the device I put in a first-timer's hand next to a Coinbase withdrawal. What It Is

A numeric keypad, a small screen, a secure element, and a culture of "verify on the device." Official site: coldcard.com. It does not do Ethereum. It does not have a friendly companion store. Desktop partners are wallets like Sparrow, which already speak PSBT.

Strengths

Air-gap as the default path. SD-card signing means the seed never rides a USB cable next to your email. That is the product.
Bitcoin-only focus. Fewer chains, fewer surprise apps, fewer "install this coin" prompts. Same philosophy as Sparrow on the desktop side.
Serious backup story. Seed XOR / split backups and a long list of duress and brick features exist if you need them. Most households should not turn all of those on. See passphrase wallets before you invent a puzzle your spouse cannot finish.
The company publishes like an engineer, not a lifestyle brand. That is a taste thing, and it is why some of my more careful clients trust it.

Weaknesses and Honest Warnings

The learning curve is real. If PSBT, derivation paths, and "export xpub" sound like noise, you will mis-sign or think you lost coins. We do a session before size moves onto one of these.
Easy to over-configure. Duress PINs, brick-me phrases, and split seeds are how inheritance fails. The inheritance guide still wants a letter a tired person can follow.
Supply and clones. Buy from the official shop. A "deal" Coldcard in a marketplace listing is a research project, not a bargain.
Not a multi-chain daily driver. If you live in EVM dapps, this is the savings account, not the spending wallet. Keep the hot side small.

Who Should Skip It

Anyone who wanted NFC tap-to-sign and an App Store icon. Trezor and Ledger remain the honest first hardware for most people I meet. Coldcard is what you graduate to when the threat model and the patience both showed up. Pair it with Sparrow, a steel backup, and one completed restore test.
