What Is a Steel Backup?

A steel backup is a metal plate or tiles that hold your seed phrase so a house fire or a flooded basement does not erase the only copy. Paper burns. Ink runs. I still start people on paper the day we create the wallet, then we graduate to steel once the amount would hurt to lose. It is not a brand. It is a material choice.

Who This Is For

Anyone whose hardware wallet now holds more than they want to reconstruct from memory. It is not for a $40 experiment. It is not a reason to photograph the plate "as a second copy."

How It Actually Works

You punch, tile, or engrave the BIP-39 words (see BIP-39) onto stainless. Some kits use the first four letters, which is enough to uniquely identify each English word. Proofread against the card before you put the card away.
The plate goes in the same class of place as a deed or a passport: a safe, a safe deposit box you can actually reach, not a storage unit you forget exists.
A watch-only app still shows the balance. The steel is for the day the device dies or you do.

Risks I See in Sessions

One wrong letter. The checksum may fail on restore, or worse, restore a different empty wallet. Test a restore. The inheritance guide is built around that test.
Two plates in two cities sounds clever until you cannot remember which is current after you added a passphrase.
Buying the cheapest Amazon kit with tiles that fall out in a fire. Spend enough that the product is actually steel, then stop collecting gadgets.
