What Is Coinbase Wallet? An Honest Review

Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody app that happens to share a brand with the largest U.S. exchange. That branding is the feature and the hazard. The wallet holds your seed phrase. The exchange holds an IOU. They can talk to each other. They are not the same account. I have no sponsorship with Coinbase on this review. What It Is

A mobile-first hot wallet with a dapp browser, NFT gallery, multi-chain support, and a prominent "buy" path that opens Coinbase or other on-ramps. Recovery is a seed, plus optional cloud backup schemes you should treat as hot. It is closer to MetaMask / Phantom than to your Coinbase login.

Strengths

The name lowers the first-time fear of leaving the exchange, which is the step I actually want people to take with money they mean to keep.
A clear mental split once you see both apps: exchange for buys, wallet for keys. The in-app transfer path is convenient if you verify the address.
Broad network support for someone who does not want three extensions on day one.

Weaknesses and Honest Warnings

Phishing loves this brand. Fake "Coinbase Wallet" apps and "sync your wallet" emails are constant. Install only from the official site, coinbase.com/wallet, and never from a texted link.
The dapp browser is a drainer hallway the same as every in-app browser. A Coinbase logo on the wallet does not audit the site you just opened.
Cloud recovery and easy on-ramps nudge people to treat it like the exchange. It is still a hot wallet on a phone. Meaningful balances belong on hardware.
Shared brand, separate failures. An exchange outage does not freeze the wallet. A lost seed is not a Coinbase support ticket. People call the wrong building.

Who It Is Good For

Coinbase users taking the first honest step into self-custody with pocket money. Who should look elsewhere: active EVM power users (Rabby/MetaMask) and Solana-first users (Phantom). The architecture remains: this wallet for spending, hardware for savings, exchange for the on-ramp only.
