What Is a Hot Wallet?
A hot wallet is any crypto wallet whose keys live on an internet-connected device: a browser extension, a phone app, a desktop program. Hot means reachable, and reachable means fast, convenient, and exposed. It is the checking account of crypto, not the safe.
How It Actually Works
The wallet generates and stores your private keys on the device itself, encrypted behind a password. Signing happens on the same machine that browses the web, opens email attachments, and installs software. Wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, and Rabby are all hot by design; that is what lets them talk to dapps instantly.
The Attack Surface, Honestly
- Malware and clipboard hijackers on the device can reach what the device holds.
- Malicious signatures and approvals can spend from a hot wallet the moment you approve them; this is drainer territory.
- Phishing targets hot wallet users constantly because the payoff is immediate.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Keeping life-changing balances in one. The rule from my Security page: hot wallets hold what you are actively using, and no more than you could lose without real pain.
- One wallet for everything. Separate a spending wallet (touches dapps) from a vault (touches nothing). Approvals never belong on the vault.
- Screenshotting or cloud-saving the seed phrase, which converts a device compromise into a total loss.
When It Matters
Every active user needs a hot wallet; the mistake is stopping there. The complement is a cold wallet for storage, usually a hardware device.
