What Is Ledger Live? An Honest Review
Ledger Live is the official desktop and phone app for Ledger hardware wallets. It shows balances, sends and receives, installs coin apps on the device, and offers swaps and other services in the same window. Used correctly, it is a remote control for keys that stay on the device. Used carelessly, it is a very polished place to click something you should not. I have no sponsorship or affiliate relationship with Ledger. The device comparison lives in my Ledger vs. Trezor review.
What It Is
A companion, not a wallet in the hot-wallet sense. The seed is supposed to be born on the device and never appear on the computer. Live talks to the device over USB or Bluetooth, asks it to sign, and you confirm on the trusted screen. That split is the product. If you ever type a seed into Ledger Live, you have stepped out of the product.
Strengths
- One official window for the coins Ledger supports, with firmware prompts that beat downloading random updaters.
- Device-screen confirmation on sends. The computer can lie. The device screen is the check. Use it every time, including the address you are paying.
- Works as a front end next to MetaMask or Phantom when you want dapps without keeping keys in the extension.
Weaknesses and Honest Warnings
- In-app swaps and earn features are convenience, usually with a spread. Fine for dust. Poor for size. Compare, or leave the app and use a venue you already researched.
- Ledger Recover remains the trust-model argument. It is optional and off by default. If you never wanted a path for a seed backup to leave the device, leave it off and prefer a steel backup you control. The 2023 announcement is why some people picked Trezor. That reason has not expired.
- Fake Ledger Live downloads and "support" pop-ups are a constant phish. Install only from ledger.com, and never from a Google ad. Real support will not ask for your seed. Nobody legitimate will.
- A companion app on a compromised computer can still show you the wrong address until you check the device. The device is the security. The app is furniture.
Who It Is Good For
Ledger owners who want balances and simple sends without living in third-party software. Who should skip the extra tabs: anyone who bought the device to reduce attack surface and then filled the app with swap-and-earn upsells. Official download only from the manufacturer.
