What Is CoinGecko? An Honest Review (and the CoinMarketCap Question)
CoinGecko is one of the two default answers to "what is this coin's price?", the other being CoinMarketCap. Both aggregate prices, volumes, and supply data across thousands of tokens and exchanges. Neither is a place to buy anything, and both get treated as more authoritative than they claim to be. No sponsorship, no affiliate links.
What It Is
A data aggregator: coin pages with price, market cap, FDV, volume across venues, supply schedules, links, and rankings. CoinGecko also runs GeckoTerminal, reviewed here, for DEX pairs too fresh for a full listing.
CoinGecko vs. CoinMarketCap, Honestly
- Both list vastly, rank by the same headline numbers, and monetize attention: ads, boosted placements, and (CMC especially, being Binance-owned since 2019) ecosystem tie-ins. CoinGecko's independence is a modest structural point in its favor; neither is neutral infrastructure.
- Methodologies for filtering fake volume differ and both improved after the 2019-era scandals showing most reported exchange volume was wash-traded. Treat volume as venue-reported testimony either way.
- Practical verdict: they agree on anything that matters for major assets. Keep one as your habit, use the other as a cross-check, and let disagreements be the signal.
Reading a Coin Page Without Being Fooled
- Listed does not mean legitimate. Listing bars are low and scam tokens with polished pages exist on both sites. The contract address on the page is the useful part: verify it against the project's own channels.
- Rankings reward what is measurable: cap and volume, both gameable. A rank is a claim wearing a number.
- The genuinely useful bits: supply schedules and unlock data (the FDV gap), venue lists (where real liquidity lives), and historical charts for context, not prophecy.
Who It Is Good For
Everyone, as a reference desk: checking prices, supplies, and where something trades. Nobody, as a due-diligence endpoint: the research routine on my Memecoins page starts where the coin page ends.
The real sites: CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap.
