What Is Taproot?
Taproot is Bitcoin's November 2021 soft fork. It lets complicated spends, multisig, timelocks, and other scripts, look like a simple single-key spend when everyone cooperates. Fees drop for those paths. Chain observers see less of the contract. Ordinary single-sig payments get a modest improvement too, via Schnorr signatures.
How It Actually Works
- A Taproot output commits to a key and, optionally, to hidden scripts. If signers agree, they spend with a signature and never reveal the scripts. If they disagree, they reveal the relevant branch and spend that way.
- Addresses look like longer bc1p... strings (Bech32m). Wallets had to add support. Most serious ones have.
- It builds on SegWit. You do not pick one or the other as a coin. You pick a wallet that speaks the current formats.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Sending Taproot to a service that cannot spend it. Less common in 2026, still worth a test send.
- Assuming Taproot made Bitcoin private like a mixer. It made cooperative complex spends look ordinary. It did not hide amounts or stop clustering of reused addresses. See CoinJoin for the other privacy conversation.
When It Matters
Multisig setups, Lightning, and fee hygiene. It is plumbing. The Fundamentals page is the wider map.
