What Is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a purpose-built layer-1 chain whose main attraction is a fully on-chain perpetual futures exchange. If that sentence already feels like three ideas taped together, here's the version I use when someone's sharing their screen: it's a trading venue that isn't Coinbase or Binance, it keeps an order book on its own chain instead of in a company's database, and the thing most people actually do there is bet on prices with leverage. I'm not going to tell you to use it. I am going to tell you what it is, because it's become one of those names that shows up in every other conversation.

Under the hood there are two halves. HyperCore is the matching engine and the book, the part that looks like a serious derivatives venue. HyperEVM is the general-purpose contract layer, so other apps can live on the same chain. You don't need that split memorized to deposit. You do need it when someone says "it's just like Uniswap" and it isn't. Uniswap is an AMM. Hyperliquid's perps are an order book with leverage, which means liquidations are part of the product, not a rare accident.

The reason it got big is boring and important: traders wanted a book that felt as fast as a centralized exchange without parking everything at a firm that can freeze withdrawals. Whether that tradeoff is worth it for you depends on whether you already understand isolated margin and whether you can live with bridge risk. The how-to lives on the Hyperliquid guide. This page is the noun.
