What Is FUD?
FUD, fear, uncertainty, and doubt, started as a term for deliberately spread negativity and became crypto's universal dismissal: any criticism, however accurate, gets waved off as FUD. That double life is the problem. Some FUD is manipulation; some is the fire alarm. The skill is telling them apart, and the crowd is reliably bad at it.
How It Actually Works
- Manipulative FUD exists: coordinated scare campaigns ahead of accumulation, exaggerated hack rumors, and recycled 2017 headlines timed to shake out sellers. Panic is as manufacturable as FOMO, and shorts profit from it the way promoters profit from euphoria.
- Accurate warnings get the same label: every collapse in crypto history, exchanges, lenders, Terra, was preceded by people raising specifics and being dismissed as FUDders. The label is cheaper than a rebuttal, which is exactly why communities overuse it.
- The tell is specificity: real risk information names mechanisms (reserves, redemption paths, unlock schedules, contract permissions) that can be checked. Manipulation and tribal dismissal both prefer vibes.
How to Process Negative News
- Convert claims into checkable questions: can I verify flows on an explorer, reserves on an attestation, concentration on a holder map? Checkable and confirmed beats loud either way.
- Watch incentives in both directions: who profits from your fear, and who profits from your calm? Communities defending a bag are not neutral fact-checkers.
- Position sizing is the universal answer: at sane size, per the Portfolio page, no single headline forces action, and you can investigate instead of react.
When It Matters
Every red day with a scary story attached, and every community calling a documented risk FUD. The emotional pair with FOMO brackets the whole cycle on my Trading page.
