What Is a Whitepaper?
A whitepaper is a document that claims to explain a system. Bitcoin's 2008 paper was nine pages of problem, design, and argument. Most token "whitepapers" since are marketing decks with equations. Both get the same filename. They do not deserve the same attention.
How to Read One Without Getting Hypnotized
- Problem first. If you cannot restate the problem in a sentence, the paper did not either. Diagrams of "ecosystems" are not problems.
- Who can change the rules? A paper that describes an immutable protocol is a different object from a paper that describes a startup with a token. Look for admin keys, upgrade proxies, and the emission schedule.
- What is the token for, mechanically? Gas, a claim on fees, a voting chip, a souvenir. "Alignment" and "capture value" are not mechanisms. My securities guide is relevant when the mechanism sounds like an investment contract.
- Citations and limits. Serious papers name failure modes. Sales papers name partners and roadmaps.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Treating length or math as proof. Formal-looking notation is cheap. Working code and years of uptime are not.
- Skipping straight to tokenomics. If the product is vapor, the vesting table is a schedule for distributing vapor.
- Fake papers and AI-generated technical documents attached to memecoins. A PDF is not due diligence. The memecoin routine still starts with the contract and the holders.
When It Matters
Evaluating anything that asks you to read before you buy, and calibrating respect: Bitcoin's paper is worth an evening. Most others are worth the time it takes to answer the four bullets above. Official Bitcoin paper: bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf.
