What Is a Testnet?
A testnet is a practice blockchain. It runs real software against fake coins so developers can break things without lighting real money on fire. Ethereum has Sepolia and others; Bitcoin has testnet3/testnet4; most serious chains ship one. The coins are worthless by design. That fact is both the point and the opening for scams.
How It Actually Works
- Testnet coins come from faucets, websites that drip small amounts so you can deploy a contract or click through a dapp. There is no market, or there should not be one.
- Wallets can add a test network beside mainnet. The interface looks similar on purpose. The danger is mixing them up, or worse, using a mainnet seed on a random "test" site.
- Teams announce testnet campaigns as a path to airdrops. Sometimes that is real. Often it is unpaid labor plus a sybil farm.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Fake faucets and fake testnets are drainers in a lab coat. They ask you to connect a wallet that holds real funds, or to "verify" with a signature that is a drainer. Use a throwaway wallet with no mainnet assets. Official faucet links come from project docs you typed yourself.
- Sending real assets to a testnet address, or the reverse. Check the network name before every send.
- Paying for testnet tokens. If someone is selling you Sepolia ETH, you are the product.
When It Matters
Trying a new dapp, learning to send a transaction, and ignoring any urgent "testnet is closing, connect now" message. Practice on an empty wallet. The habits transfer; the balances must not.
