What Is a Block Explorer?
A block explorer is a search engine for a blockchain: paste a transaction, address, or contract and see what the ledger recorded. Etherscan is the Ethereum household name. Mempool.space does Bitcoin. Solscan does Solana. Learning to read one is more useful than another year of price YouTube.
How It Actually Works
- The explorer's servers read nodes (or run them) and index the data into pages: status, fees, token transfers, logs, internal calls.
- Useful lookups: did my send land, what is this token's contract, who am I about to pay, what approvals are live, is the source verified. The Etherscan review walks those five in order.
- The explorer is a window. The chain is the source. A fake explorer can show you a fake world. Bookmark the real one.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Clicking a token you did not buy because it appeared in your history. That is bait. See airdrops.
- Reading a pending transaction as done. Wait for confirmations.
- Trusting labels as gospel. They are hints. Arkham and Etherscan tags are both wrong sometimes.
